In an interview with The Chronicles of Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche, Mark Nowakowski — a member of the Nalanda Translation Committee — recalled a 1975 seminary talk by Rinpoche. In a section about slogan practice, Trungpa Rinpoche brought up the subject of Döns.
“The idea there is that you are inviting the dons to wake you up. That if you get too complacent in your practice, then you’re actually inviting that kind of wake-up call,” Mark said. “It’s not like trick-or-treat, where you’re giving them something so they’ll go away. It’s more that you are inviting that kind of wake-up, if you need it.”
