The Wisdom Teachings of Chinese Strategist Zhuge Liang
Zhuge Liang’s wisdom and practical teachings are timeless, inspiring, and deeply relevant for anyone wanting to lead in a truly effective way. Artful and strategic leadership begins with focusing first on how to “be.” As Zhuge Liang reflected, leadership must be grounded in self-knowledge and virtue. Then, one can look at what to “do.”
A vast and bright mind is required to illuminate vision. … It is only through simplicity and humility that vision can be illuminated. It is only through stillness and inner peace that we can have a vast view. –
Zhuge Liang
Zhuge Liang is one of the world’s greatest military strategists and a renowned statesperson. Diplomat, covert operator and tactician, he advised rulers, military commanders, and commercial leaders in third century China. A central and unique teaching of Zhuge Liang is that leaders need to be strategists steeped in virtue as well as pragmatics in order to have the greatest long-term impact.
Dr. Eva Wong Teaching on Zhuge Liang
These leadership programs are a blend of the classic teachings of Zhuge Liang with the real world experience of Dr. Eva Wong. Dr. Wong brings her considerable experience as CEO, nonprofit board member and corporate consultant to her courses and workshops. This current series is based on her book: A Course on Mastering the Art of Leadership and Strategy – Based on the Writings of Zhuge Liang.
Zhuge Liang teaches us to lead with humbleness, simplicity, and a vast mind. Beginning with self-cultivation, we can learn how to be effective. This is the “bright path.” From the essential ground of self-knowledge – starting with our own heart and mind, virtue, and always learning, we learn to observe the natural world and how to relate with others and the world. Building on this understanding and ground, we discover the principles of being a leader and establishing authentic and artful leadership. The result is being a strategic leader in all of our capacities who balances vision and effective action for the benefit of humanity.
Learning and applying these teachings gives us the ability to balance and effectively apply strategy and tactics. Alongside and sharing with others, we can deepen our understanding, hone our skills, and put these teachings into practice in our lives, work, and society.
